Summer Math By-election Results
The Election Committee has reached a formal ruling regarding the summer Math by-election and is releasing the results of the vote.
The candidates in the election all inadvertently neglected to comply with Council Procedure 6 section J, 1. Each candidate incurred no actual spending in their campaigns and failed to submit a budget declaring zero spending. All budgets were reported below the $75 spending limit set out in Council Procedure 6 section K, 1.
In the committees judgment to disqualify all the candidates would be counter productive. Section J, 1. is an area of policy known to be easy for candidates to confuse as was seen in the winter elections. Candidates in the summer by-election were not reminded of need to submit a budget even if the budget is for zero spending or only fair market value spending as was done for winter candidates.
Given these circumstances and the recent upholding of candidates eligibility in the winter elections under similar and less forgiving circumstances, the Election Committee unanimously agreed to suspend the strict deadline outlined in Council Procedure 6 section J,1.
The Election Committee will be working to make productive recommendations to improve the election experience for candidates, students and volunteers with 60 days of the end of the elections as per Council Procedure 6.
This ruling is subject to the revision at the discretion of Students? Council.
Consequently, the Election Committee would like to announce the results of the Math by-election. The results are as follows:
Declined 2
Jacob, Ajnu 45
Kamal, Sajjad 16
Macdonald, Barbara 52
Qadri, Sarmad 27
